Now this is interesting:

"There is also an integrated test pattern generator inside of the LG OLED models. If you’re calibrating with CalMAN, it can create its own test patterns so you don’t need to connect anything over HDMI and it can do it with full 10-bit triplets. You’ll still need software and a meter, but it makes the process that much easier and more reliable."

I don't suppose this is something we'll see being implemented on the older 2018 models?

Unfortunately the internal pattern generator is a 2019 TV feature only. It does however support SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision Calibration.

Awesome feature, hopefully, this is something that will become standard across all displays.

I was wondering about highlights that are associated with color saturation, something I didn't know I was missing, until I actually did a color calibration. At the bottom of the article it is mentioned, but only concerning white boost being disabled. Ultimately, I prefer detail over brightness or a balanced approach.

The same functionality as the 2018 TVs. However now you can reset a CalMAN calibrated picture mode back to factory, without having to factory reset the whole TV.

Is this something that will be coming to the 2018 models? Resetting a CalMAN calibrated picture mode without needing to do a factory reset?

Also for the 2019 is it possible to have a unique custom tone mapping per picture memory as well as per input?

Are these patterns visible without CalMAN software?

Is this TPG solution inside the TV (DDC) or is it a kind of client3 client?
Will it be usable only with CalMAN or also by anyone who knows how to control/activate it?

1. Unfortunately it’s only a LG 2019 TV feature

2. Each HDR picture mode can have three custom tone maps. The TV will interpolate in between the three that you set up. Say you set up tone maps for 1000, 4000 and 10,000 nits content, If you play 6000 nit content the TV will interpolate between the 4000 and 10,000.

The pattern generator is a part of the LG Alpha9 Gen2, and Alpha 7 Gen 2 chips in the 2019 TVs.
