Panasonic GH5/GH5s Firmware 2.4/1.2

Very disappointing, all the time I spent perfecting manual focus technique, wasted!

Wow! Now this adds some perspective on Panasonic's decision to stay with contrast-based AF in the upcoming FF cameras. I haven't tried this new firmware yet, but it would seem that somehow Panasonic has made this AF system on par with PDAF. Now that's impressive.

Well I have to be honest here. I just installed the latest firmware and at least within the relatively low light of my house, I can't say I'm seeing any massive upgrade in AF capability. It might work better in good light, so I'll reserve judgement.

Panasonic Guidebook on How to Use AF on GH5, GH5s, G9

Really useful - settings for different scenarios (lots of options) - for group sport, zoos, low-light, etc.

That is a lot of good information, but for run n gun shooting, good luck. By the time you figure out what combination of settings is applicable for the situation, your subject or the action is gone.

Many GH5 users, myself included, have experimented with these settings and their permutations and have come to the conclusion that the best overall AF approach is to use the central area with AF settings at default. I’ve always said Panasonic’s AF is not nearly as bad as many have made it out to be (and kudos to Panasonic for continuing to refine it), but Sony’s is still the best.

However, as I’ve said many times, AF lock is your friend, subject permitting. Nothing is as fast or as responsive as hitting the assigned button to simultaneously acquire and lock AF. You’d be surprised as to how often you can use that approach successfully.

I agree with this; central area, and acquire and locking focus works well (and is necessary). But for moving subjects that you want to highlight (so limited DOF), you need the ability to track, and this has improved.

Has anyone tried this yet? I just updated both cams, GH5 and GH5s, but have not used it.

You didn’t see my post above. I’ve tried it, and at least in my shooting scenarios, I haven’t seen a significant change. I haven’t used the tracking much, so if that’s a frequent use case for you maybe you’ll see a worthwhile change.

At this point I use my A7iii far more often, to the point where I’m considering selling my GH5. Between my preference for the A7iii’s overall PQ and better AF, my GH5 is essentially being used for ‘experimenting’.

Yes, I saw it and thanks. I guess I was looking for somebody who had tried the 225 area auto focus as that is where the improvements shown by Nino Leitner seem to be. Even the last firmware face/eye detection seemed like an improvement over 1 area detection.

A problem for wedding videographers with Sony mirrorless and A series remains the 30 minute recording limit and the 8 bit codec. The client also wants 15-20% 4K 60p shots slow motion in post for highlight reel footage. We'll see next year if the new Panasonic FF will entice me to change but right now the GH5/GH5s is the best pairing for what I do.

Also, the bigger problem with the auto focus from the previous firmware update wasn't acquiring focus, the problem was that once acquired, it would continue to "pulse" such that background out of focus highlights would swell and shrink. That's why I went full manual. I couldn't leave it unattended on a tripod pointed at the couple with auto focus because of the pulsing.

Are the other modes besides 225 area obsolete?
