New E-Manual on the Korean website, BUT!

http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...TSCJ-1.411.pdf

BUT, has this showed up on the actual TV? (Just checked - version 1.40 on the set)

Canadian Samsung Website for the SEK-3500U, not that there's much useful there.
Unlike European Samsung websites that at least have more info plus FW updates.

http://www.samsung.com/ca/tv-access...0/SEK-3500UZA/

NA Samsung see the SEK-3500U as only a lowly accessory! (Can't even be registered because of this.)

Remote Control - EXTRA Button & No Time Information

Just a heads up that you may find that the EXTRA button on the remote control that comes packaged with the SEK-3500 is causing the TV to come up with the message “This service is not available” as pictured in the thumbnail below.

This is happening on both my HU9000 + SEK-3500 as well as my HU7000 + SEK-7000 but was working the last time I checked maybe last week or so ago.

Perhaps a server issue at Samsung’s end. I have read similar posts on AVS Forum that one day it can be working for some and not the next so not really concerned as it’s not something I really use much.

Update: I reposted this as I saw a number of you had already clicked on the picture and wanted to let you all know that it definitely appears to be an issue at Samsung end as I just noticed the Time information that appears in the upper right corner is displaying “No Time Information” as shown in the second thumbnail. This concerns me very much as I use the overlay in lieu of a clock in the living room and am lost without it!

CASE SOLVED

As it turns out the issue was at my end.

A little background information: My HU9000 + SEK-3500, my Arris Cable Box, my UBD-K8500 Blu-ray Player, my Apple TV 4K, my 4K Computer, my Marantz Receiver, as well as my Lutron Smart Bridge are all connected to my router and switch in a wired fashion and then I have a number of devices connected wirelessly that range from soup to nuts.

Here were the steps I took to fix the issues on the TV...

  1. I performed a Menu > Support > Self Diagnosis > Smart Hub Connection Test and received the diagnosis shown in the 3rd thumbnail indicating that my IP Auto Settings Failed. Error Code 105

  2. Next I went to reset my modem and can normally pull up the my settings screen by entering the address 192.168.1.254 on my Safari Browser on my iPad to avoid having to reach around to the back of my TV where my router is but this time received the error message Cannot Open Page - Safari cound not open the page because the server stopped responding.

  3. I should have tried the Smart Hub apps but I probably would have received an error message like I had reported in the past in my post titled Not Connected to the Internet - WAS003

  4. Next I unplugged my router, waited 10 seconds, plugged it back in and the EXTRA screen is back to normal as shown in the 4th thumbnail as is the Time Information.

In closing I have been having issues with my router lately and find that more and more often I am having to reboot it to overcome issues like the Smart Hub WAS-003 error or todays Error Code 105 that the TV was reporting. At times when I am having no problems using my iPad's browser or email apps, my wife can use the browser on her iPod but sometimes she will receive error messages while her device is trying to download her new messages (even though it has no problems when she is out and about connected to other wireless networks). The only solution is for me to reboot our router which works every time.

Time for me to give my Service Provider a call and exchange my router!

Had problem with my modem router, until I realized I had a pamphlet along side the router that was preventing proper ventilation. Now with all sides cleared, no more router issues.

Hi,

can some kind forum member help me in choosing the correct version of SEK-3500 form my UE65F9000 bought in Bulgaria (should be EU version I guess)

SEK-3500U/ZG has 2 CI slots (German version)
SEK-3500U/XC has 1 CI slot (European version)
SEK-3500U/ZA has none (North American version)

My original SEK (i guess SEK-1000) dont have CI slot, it is located on the back of TV. And had some issue with it in the past, luckily still works.

My original is CI+ 1.3, is there any newer version to benefit from CI slot on evolution kit (one connect box).

Hey all just a quick question. I've noticed my 3500 is a bit noisy. Sounds like a bit of a grinding noise when you are close to it. I'm assuming it was the fan. I know there have been issues so I am wondering if everyones SEK runs silent or if there is some noise associated with it. I took opened the casing and compressed aired out the fan which was fairly full of dust. Just wondering if I should be thinking of the fan dying or if this a normal noise. Thanks for any advice.

I have two — one hooked up to my HU7000 in the bedroom and another in the living room hooked up to my HU9000. They both run as quiet as a church mouse. But i am familiar with a dying fan. See this post...

Hi Gent,

Im now in doubt to buy SEK-3500 or not at all any SEK... I`m watching now $60 xiaomi mi box s ...

"The Xiaomi Mi Box S supports a 4K (2160x4096 pixels) resolution with HDR quality at 60fps, and runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. It is powered by a quad-core 64-bit Cortex A53 CPU, coupled with a Mali-450 GPU, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, and 8GB of eMMC storage. In terms of connectivity, the media player gets dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth v4.2. Ports include 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 power interface, 1 HDMI 2.0a, and 1 audio out"

Question is does SEK-3500 provide improvement in picture on 1080p TV and 1080 DLNA videos? And does it play .idx 3d subs?

My observation is that stock SEK give better picture when playing videos from DLNA compared with video input via HDMI from PC player.

I relay dont like the idea to have second box and second remote...

Until your post I have never heard of an Xiaomi Mi Box but now I see it’s similar to an Apple TV 4K that runs Android...

http://www.mi.com/us/mi-box-s/

There doesn’t seem like a lot of guys on AVS are jumping all over this product considering there are less than 300 posts in the last 2+ years. Here’s the AVS Forum thread for anyone who’s interested...

Xiaomi Mi Box

As for your questions:

Quote:

Short Answer

Yes and I don’t think so.

Musician Answer

The combined experience of owners on this thread is that the SEK-3500 does indeed improve a 1080p picture since at the time it was introduced that is what most of us were basing our opinions on considering there wasn’t much in the way of 4K content available at the time and very little in the way of 4K HDR other than the clips that @player002 managed to score for us.

Even to this day, as most guys will tell you, a lot of viewing on our 4K TVs is upscaled HD SDR content while at the same time I am very happy with the ability to play 4K content from apps like YouTube and enjoy the 4K HDR content that abounds on apps like Netflix!

I have a PC hooked up to my SEK-3500 via HDMI and also have the ability to access my Network over DLNA. I would give a big nod to the HDMI connection especially since i run a high-end NVidea GeForce GTX graphics card capable of 4K HDR via HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2. As for viewing ultra hi-res (e.g greater than 4K) photos and movies stored on the computer, I would say they produce identical results.

I searched the manual the SEK-3500 shares with the JS series for you and no results for “idx”. I also searched Google for you using the Search term as follows and didn’t have any success:

Google: “Samsung” AND “idx”

You could always use the Search this Thread option and search for “subtitles” where I did find some posts like post 15746 that might be related to your question or you might want to call Samsung Suppprt and see what they have to say about idx files.

^^^^^^not to mention, @kingarthas and @Musician , you will not be getting any HDR out of the Mi Box without an SEK-3500; all ports on the 3500 are HDMI 2.0a-compliant (i.e., HDR-10).

The only way I would know for certain is for you to go and lift it up and turn it over and take a picture of the label on the bottom and on the second line where it shows Model Code it should read SEK3500U/ZA as per the thumbnail 1.

The rear view and side view of the North American model (see thumbnails 2 & 3 of mine below) differ from models built for other areas of the world such as those from Europe.

Note that the date it was manufactured can differ depending on when we each bought ours but the same manual and operating instructions would apply.

Cheers! 🥂🍾

I received the following Private Message that can help so many others on this thread who might be considering adding a SEK-4500 to a setup that includes an SEK-3500. As you will see there is relatively little to be gained and actually a giant step backwards if anyone is considering buying a 2018 SEK-4500 who don’t already own a 2015 JS series or 2015 SEK-3500...

I talked to Samsung and did not get anything firm. Do you know of any retail sources where I can purchase a 3500? Our local TV rep is saying we need to buy on ebay. It sounds like I would need a 3500 and a 4500 to get the major picture enhancements. Is this true?

Thanks,
Rick
More like I am looking at the trade offs between the SEK-3500 and SEK-4500 for you.

You definately wouldn’t need both to obtain all the major picture enhancement. As a matter of fact ALL of those came with the 2015 SEK-3500 Evolution Kit. Many of us are of the opinion that the 2018 SEK-4500 is nothing but a glorified box that adds a new interface to your existing TV. Case in point, an SEK-4500 owner would still use your existing remote control to make all the Menu >> Picture settings and would be limited by the technology included in their old TV that it would be hooked up to.

In post 1 in the 2018 Samsung SEK-4500 Evolution Kit thread I have delved into some of the issues encountered thus far and in post 2 I have uploaded the following spreadsheet in PDF format shown below.

As you can see there are only a few blue shaded boxes in the SEK-4500 column. As for the yellow shaded boxes you would only achieve these benefits if it was plugged into a 2015 JS series or 2015 SEK-3500... but if you compare the last column with the one to the left of it as you can see you would already have the features without upgrading twice if you already owned the SEK-3500.

In a nutshell your current HDMI ports on Samsung TVs developed before 2015 do not support HDMI 2.0a (required for HDR) and HDCP 2.2 (that ensures 4K protected content isn't reduced to HD 1080p) so you would want the SEK-3500 if HDR and 'true' 4K was important to you.

So here are your options:

1) Buy the SEK-3500 and it will bring all the picture improvements to your TV mentioned in this thread which includes HDMI 2.0a (required for HDR) and HDCP 2.2 (required for 4K protected content) as listed in the following Spoiler tag...

Spoiler!

2) Optionally, if you have a lot of money on your hands you can also buy an SEK-4500 and plug that into the SEK-3500 but all you would gain would be Tizen 4, SmartThings, VP9.2 and you can use the ports on both the SEK-4500 (which has 3) and the SEK-3500 which would have 3 available after plugging in the new Evo Kit for a total of 6 instead of 4. But not worth the cost or the hassle as far as I am concerned. At this point if you were to sell your 2014 TV and combine it with the money you would have spent on a SEK-3500 and SEK-4500 you could put that towards a 2018 TV with much newer technology.

To repeat myself: If you buy the SEK-4500 and don't have a 2015 JS or SEK-3500 to plug it into you will not receive the benefits shown in the yellow shaded boxes or in the spreadsheet in the Spoiler tag under Option 1 above.

As for where the SEK-3500 is available, on the previous page I posted the following. I see they have increased the price by $50 to $350 USD. Probably as a result of the negative feedback the SEK-4500 is receiving worldwide!

Important: The North Americam model you need is the SEK-3500U/ZA.

To me it seems like a downgrade than a real upgrade. No HLG HDR. No thanks. I will just buy another brand at this point!

It would have been possible if Samsung had of dealt us a 'real’ Evolution Kit like they did when the SEK-3500 came out which replaced the entire brains of the TV as well as well as all our HDMI ports to HDMI 2.0a / HDCP 2.2 which were the current (2015) specs but in order to give us really anything more than what we already have such as HDR10+ or HLG they would have needed to retain the past methodology of Evolution Kits that don’t plug into an HDMI port and upgraded all the HDMI ports to HDMI 2.0b.

HDMI 2.0b standard gets support for HLG HDR

Damned if I would pay $400 CAD for a new interface and SmartThings (since I use Apple Home Kit for controlling my home automation smart device such as lights etc. because I don't want my house burning down while I am out) along with 2 more HDMI inputs which would require me juggling the SEK-3500 & SEK-4500 remotes! Other than that it offers nothing that we don't already have!!!

Yep its like they took the point of the evolution kit and pooped all over it! Its not like they are releasing one every year doing a Tic Toc release. This is just straight up to keep the company from being sued and so PR people can say see we did release something! To be damned if it had any real enhancements!

Sorry for my ignorance of forum protocol and really appreciate your info/advice. We have a 2014 UN55HU9000. Is there any chance that the SEK-4500 for US release will be a complete update, not requiring a SEK-3500 to add the HDR for example? When I talked to Samsung support, they implied I would get all the upgrades in the SEK-4500. However, my confidence in their information is not good. The next time I called they said they are not producing/selling anymore evolution kits and that is the reason the Samsung site does not have a way to purchase one. They then referred me to their parts department that never answered the call. Is there anyone reporting they have bought one in the US? Would there be a difference in systems offered in Canada and the US?

Thanks again,
Rick

Not forum protocol, it’s my protocol.

My Soapbox

Not sure if you saw post 23564 above which provided detailed answers to your earlier questions sent to me via Private Message with parts of the answers being contained in Spoiler Tags to reduce the size of the post... this is the reason I prefer to reply to questions on the public threads so others get the opportunity to weigh in who may have additional information to offer. I also have no intentions of catering to one guy in this thread behind-the-scenes who would consider buying the SEK-4500. And one more thing, AVS Forum does not provide a means to simply add pictures to Private Messages like they do on the open threads.

What I have found of late is guys join AVS Forum, ask questions, and leave and don’t stick around and ‘give back’ to the community and it’s getting kind of old. A big part of that is because every possible question that could have been asked about the SEK-3500 has been asked and answered multiple times. Another reason is that newcomers to this thread are what might commonly be referred to as “Late To the Party” since the 2015 SEK-4500 Evolution Kit was released well over 3 years ago.

Making this even more complicated is for guys who are trying to understand why the SEK-4500 would also require the SEK-3500 to ‘work properly’ and for many that might mean some extensive reading of articles I have provided in the first post on the SEK-4500 thread.

SEK-4500 Thread

As for the SEK-4500, everything I know is posted in the SEK-4500 thread...

2018 Samsung SEK-4500 Evolution Kit <— Click Here

I created that thread at the request of a couple of guys who wanted to avoid the SEK-3500 thread becoming the SEK-4500 thread — and I don’t blame them — and for interested parties to scaddaddle over there.

Maybe since the SEK-4500 hasn’t hit the US market yet you might want to cool the jets and not be the first in the neighbourhood to want to own what many of us (including owners worldwide who have returned theirs) have coined a ‘POS’..... or worse. Only 4 members of AVS Forum have purchased an SEK-4500 and we thank them for their input. Two of those guys returned theirs after learning it was really no more than a “media player”.

Answers to Your Latest Round of Questions

Is there any chance that the SEK-4500 for US release will be a complete update, not requiring a SEK-3500 to add the HDR for example?

Your not the first member hoping for a miracle.

Not likely since Samsung’s site that advertises the SEK-4500 says you hook it up with a cable where one end is an HDMI... just like the European and Australian one. Here is a link to Samsung’s site where they have posted a spec sheet:

Spec Sheet

Although some of us have known this for awhile now based on feedback on the European Sites, we finally have something in writing from Samsung USA that puts that matter to rest once and for all where in the small print it says: Compatible with standard Display-Port-to-HDMI type cable.

This is NOT how previous generations of the Evolution Kits worked.

By the way this is all contained in the first post on the SEK-4500 thread.

When I talked to Samsung support, they implied I would get all the upgrades in the SEK-4500.

Well you can believe them or you can believe the many owners who have purchased one of these internationally. Not true. Only if you hook it up to a 2015 SEK-3500 or JS series that have HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2. If it were so simple we could have just plugged our 4K Blu-ray players nto our existing HU series OCB or TVs HDMI ports that were plain HDMI 2.0 (not HDMI 2.0a needed for HDR) nor were they HDCP 2.2 compliant required for copy protected 4K content without it being dumbed down to HD which has been discussed alot on the aforementioned SEK-4500 thread as recently as a day or two ago.

Here is a recent addition to the first post on the SEK-4500 thread who was trying to obtain the remote codes from Logitech who didn’t understand the SEK-4500 doesn’t share the same codes as the 2015 SEK-3500 or JS series that might help some guys understand...

Quote:
sek 4500 is more like a media player certainly not a evolutionary kit. (which is annoying).. no where near a upgrade kit as hardware is dependant on our older SEK model we connect it too. (ie my sek2500 is not hdmi 2.0a so no HDR for me.) .

It doesn't replace the old SEK and its just an addition, so for me I just get tizen 4.0 and new software features.

The manual states do not use ARC as this device does not support it. hence we do not use HDMI 4. The device itself is more like a overlay on top of our old one connect box. you can have sources on the sek 2500 and sek 4500 up at the same time (using 2 remotes).

I personally have a F9000 with sek 2500 that works great with harmony. My new sek 4500 is connected to the NON arc port on the sek 2500 as it has to connect to your existing evo kit (just like a bluray player etc would).

I'm also hanging out to get this added so I can control everything via one remote.

Batesy
Here is a first hand report from a user experiencing the fallouts of hooking up an SEK-4500 to a pre-2015 TV without an SEK-3500...

This would be the result of the F9000 not having HDMI ports supporting HDCP 2.2 which is required to watch 4K copy protected content. More on that in the SEK-4500 thread where I provided an experiment complete with pictures in post 129.

Here is what happens when the STB is plugged into an HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2 when playing 4K protected content (3840 x 2160)...

And here is what it looks like if the HDMI input doesn’t support HDCP 2.2 (1920 x 1080)...

Unfortunately many of the devices today (e.g. UHD Players; Apple TV 4k; Chromecast Ultra; 4K Set Top Boxes) upscale HD content to 4K so the banner might display 3840 x 2160 even when a device is only sending HD. See what I mean...

Is there anyone reporting they have bought one in the US?

Your question is a little vague since I told you yesterday in my PM to you to keep your eye on the SEK-4500 thread to see when they hit the streets in the USA...

So I have done one better than that. I have used your post to help you and others since it is about to hit the streets in the USA and if you keep your eye on the SEK-4500 thread I am sure someone will be posting the info over there but after reading my reply I think you will find you are much better off buying the SEK-3500...

http://01900888.com/forum/166-l...l#post57211630

Cheers!
...so you must mean the SEK-3500 and somehow missed the link I provided in my post above who is selling new sealed units for $350 USD eBay. As a matter of fact I bought one of mine from him when he was selling them for a lot less.

Would there be a difference in systems offered in Canada and the US?

Again, your question is vague. If we are talking about the SEK-3500 they are one and the same. They are both Model Code SEK-3500U/ZA.

If you are asking about the SEK-4500 then probably since it is being advertised as the SEK-4500/ZA. But no way to know for certain since they are not advertising it on their site in Canada but more than likely since Samsung has a habit of suffixing products with ‘/ZA’ in the past such as the SEK-3500 made for North America.

...

HEADS UP EVERYONE

My fingers are getting tired from typing the same stuff over and over especially if guys aren’t going to bother reading the SEK-4500 thread or catching up a wee bit in this thread starting at post 23514 when the first owner of an SEK-4500 started posting pictures on this thread. Case in point, somebody who shall remain nameless just posted the following on the SEK-4500 thread...

Quote:

Oops, I forgot when you quote somebody, their Avatar name gets posted.

If guys were reading that thread (that only contains 141 posts) they would see that pictures were posted in post 1 and post 54. Also it wouldn’t have been necessary for @p5browne to post above this post how to edit your User Profiles. That was covered in the SEK-4500 thread at least twice as early as post 9 as follows:

Quote:
Request to Members: Considering the number of different TV models between 2012 - 2015 that the SEK-4500 is compatible with, to avoid any confusion could you please do us all a favour and update your profile and provide us with the country you live in which will then appear below your Avatar on all your posts.

To make this easy on you, click the following link and scroll down until you see Additional Information and find the Location field where you can enter where you live...

User CP > Your Profile > Edit Your Details

Not only that an Evolution Kit developed for one market may not work in a different country. For example, the boxes being rolled out in Norway and other parts of Europe are called the SEK-4500/XC whereas the ones in Australia and New Zealand are called the SEK-4500/XY.

Something else many members also do is update their profiles to include a Signature listing the TV and other equipment they own which will appear at the bottom of each of their posts which can be helpful when trying to obtain help because we have learned that the SEK-4500 may exhibit "false positves" for example when plugged into certain TVs, OCBs, or SEKs.

To make that easy on you click the following link...

User CP > Settings & Options > Edit Signature

We found this information especially helpful in the SEK-3500 thread as it too was marketed worldwide and could be installed on a number of different models. The SEK-4500, even more models!

I have replaced the cooling fan in my One Connect Box, after it started making more noise than normal and getting a screen error stating there was an overheat issue and it would shut down. Been a while since the repair, but I can assist if someone is having similar issue.

Like I say, there isn't much that hasn't been posted on this thread. I have been in the same boat with one of my SEK-3500's.

Please note that the part number differs depending on the OCB or SEK it is going into. With regards to the SEK-3500 guys can order Part Number BN31-00041A that specifically indicates the fan is supported by the SEK3500U as well as various JS models from Samsung Parts currently listed for $35.12.

I did manage to get it working by tapping somewhat gently on the box but on Monday when I powered it on it took more then a gentle tapping to get the fan to engage and get rid of the scary message.

Since then each night before retiring I make sure not to press the power button on my Arris STB or the Evo Kit remote and leave the TV on but go into the Menu >> Picture >> Picture Off option to avoid the panel being left on all night and then I follow that by turning off my Receiver and then head off to bed.

I feel like Rocky on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 when I tell my wife, who is beginning to get a Groot complex, "Now whatever you do, don't push this button!!!".

As a result I started to frantically begin looking for a replacement Evo Kit and was lucky enough to find and order two. I have contacted my Samsung authorized repair shop and have arranged to have the fan replaced and will use that Evo Kit on my HU7000.

In the end I will have an unopened factory sealed SEK-3500. Will I be selling that? Not a chance. Although the SEK-3500 was somewhat readily available in Canada when they first came out, they are scarcer than hen's teeth now. I spent over $10,000 on my UN78HU9000 in Canada and knowing how fun it is to deal with Samsung Support and what a step backwards it would be loosing all the benefits the Evo Kit has brought to us, having a spare SEK-3500 laying around is well worth the investment.

I normally get 10+ years from my sets, but they're all protected with UPS Battery Backups that protect against instant on/offs that seem to be happening more frequently lately. Small price for this insurance of protection. (Plus making sure the set is actually plugged into the Battery side, and not the surge protection side.) My sets start at the top of the chain in my house - my room, and work their way down through the hierarchy in the house. All viewing areas have UPS Battery backups. My 3 major centers also have Power Control Centers from Monster, to filter and stabilize the voltage.

So, I already posted this in u9000 thread, and classifieds, but I figured it's worth a shot over here.

I purchased a Samsung un55hu9000 and the one connect box that came with is not correct. I found a sek3500 thinking that would work, but I need the original box to upgrade.

So now I have a TV and the upgraded box, and they are both useless.

If anyone has one for sale, or that I could borrow for the upgrade process that would be awesome. I found these very hard to come by.

I'm building a starter home theater with my son and this has been the first hiccup. Part numbers are below.

Problem with built-in TV-speakers

Hi guys,

During the past two weeks, my built-in speakers started to sing in a really peculiar way. To be more precise, it's seems that the low and mid-range has disappeared and I can hear only high frequencies. For those who remember the 90's, the sound is similar to the one of a PC-speaker of that time, just a bit more amplified.

I highly doubt if this a HW issue, as the self-diagnosis doesn't show anything weird.

i) Can it be that SW update 1530 (I live and bought the SEK in Switzerland), messed up the service menu settings?
ii) Does anyone of you has the SEK-3500 on a UE55F9000 (2013)? If yes, would it possible to share with me some screenshots of your service menu with the "default" (or at least functional) settings?

Btw, ARC works perfectly fine ( I seldom watch TV with the built-in speakers that's why I haven't noticed the issue earlier).

Thanks a lot and have a good weekend!

So the SEK4500 doesn't have HDR10+, Samsung is dropping Blu-ray players from their line up, will there be a different future ahead come CES ?

my tv is Hu8550 with SEK3500 connection box, as I understand this combination will support HDCP 2.2, and it works fine with current set up I have (Nvidia 960xt)

I got my fire TV 4K today, I plug that Fire TV via one of empty HDMI in my receiver (Denon X3100W), as I ran through the set up of Fire TV, the stick tells me that my tv doesn't support HDCP 2.2 therefore I can't play 4K content either from Amazon Prime nor Netflix

What should I do to play 4K from those services

Thanks

Settings>>Picture>>Picture Options>>HDMI UHD Color, is your HDMI input for the 4K Stick/path enabled here? Should be enabled.

You may need to verify the AVR too but as you say, it calls out the TV.
