Master HT Abbreviation/acronym thread

Hey All,

Here is a list of what I found: If any of these are not true or you have found other meanings please let me know. Your input is appreciated as I'm sure some are incorrect, and there are countless abbreviations I haven't included on this post as when I look at the screen I automatically see the word not the acronym.


AFAIK= As Far As I Know

AKA= Also Known As

AT= Acoustically transparent (screen)

ATM= At The Moment

AVR=Audio Video Receiver

AWOL= Absent WithOut Leave- no longer updating their HT build tread or web site- context dependent

BIG= Jeff Parkinson- HT Design/ HT Builder & helper on AVSf- he's everywhere; except the installer sticky

BTW (btw)= by the way

CFM= Cubic feet Per Minute- HVAC flow

CIA= Constant Image Area- projection/ masking

CIH= Constant Image Height- projection/ masking

CIW= Constant image Width- projection/ masking

CL= Cloth- sometimes for acoustically transparent movie posters

Clips= Decoupling clips that hold the hat channel for sound isolation

CD - Constant Directivity-DIY speaker builds/ possibly Compression Driver in the same treads.

DBA= Double Bass Array- subwoofer layout

DD/GG= 2 layers of usually 5/8” Drywall/ Green Glue in between AKA a DWGG “sandwich”

DE= Dennis Erksine- HT Design/ HT Builder- See custom installer database sticky

DIY= Do It Yourself

DL= Duct Liner - such as Linacoustics etc

DSP= Digital Signal Processing/ Processor

DVR=Digital Video Recorder

DW=Drywall

ELV Electronic Low Voltage lighting (for some can and sconce lighting)

ERV= Energy Recovery ventilation

ETA= Estimated Time of Arrival

ETC - Energy Time Curve- room correction

ETC= Estimated Time of Completion

FFS= For “Fornication’s” Sake/ for F***’s Sake

FH=Front Height

FL=Foot Lambert- Unit of luminance mainly screen and projector talk

FLH= Front Loaded Horn- DIY speaker build

FP= Front Projection

FPM= Feet Per Minute

FUBAR=F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition

FWIW= For What It’s Worth

GG= Green Glue- soundproofing thread

G2G= Get ToGether

GOM= Guilford of Maine- acoustically transparent fabric

GRX= Grafik Eye, Lutron- lighting control discussion

HC= Hat Channel- 20-25 gauge metal strip for placing soundproofing clips

HT= Home theater

HTOTM= Home Theater Of The Month- AVSf

HTIB= Home Theater In a Box (usually on another separate thread)

I Sub’d= I Subscribed to your thread- see "just Sub’d" also

IB= Infinite Baffle (wall)- subwoofer layout

IB= I-Beam- occasionally

IDK= I Don’t Know

IMHO= In My Humble Opinion

IR= InfraRed- Remotes

IR - Impulse Response- room calibration measurements

JIC= Just In Case

JW= Jurassic World (movie) or John Wick (movie) and sequels

KSA= Knowledge, Skills & Abilities or (occasionally: Kicks Some A$$)

LCR= Left, Center, Right- speaker placements

LH= Left Height- speaker layout

LOL= Laugh Out Loud

LRS - Left Rear Surround- Speaker placement

MLV= Magnetic Low Voltage lighting- rope lighting less frequently seen, depends on thread topic

MLP= Main Listening Position

MMFR= Mad Max Fury Road

MOD= Moderator of the thread/ modification- depends on context

MP= Massage Parlor, "where you need to go after a day building your theater" BIG

Mud = Drywall joint compound

NC= Noise Criterion- level is a standard describing relative loudness
of a space with a range of frequencies

OC= On Center-of stud in wall

STC rating= Sound Transmission Class- an integer describing how well a partition attenuates airborne sound, higher number, more attenuation.

TBH= To Be Honest

TBA= To Be Announced

TBD= To Be Determined

Ted White= Sound proofing guy

TH - Tapped Horn- DIY speaker build

TM= Top Middle- speaker placement

TH= Top Heights- speaker placement

UF= Woven screen model = Seymour etc…

UPS= Uninterrupted power supply

Vas= (Volume of Air Suspension) Subwoofers

VOG= Voice of God- speaker placement overhead in Auro

WAF= Wife Approval Factor

WPC=Watts Per Channel

XD= Woven screen model = Seymour etc…

XO= Cross Over Frequency

YMMV=Your Measurements Might/May Vary- other meanings also

What about all the sub/speaker types from DIY section? Will need some help on these as horns and some other types not my forte.

IB - infinite baffle

OB - open baffle

LLT - large low tuned (ported)

SLLT - structural (or super) large low tuned (ported)

FLH - front loaded horn

TH - tapped horn

Some room calibration ones...

Yea the DIY speakers and room correction are harder for me, that's why in the sub building threads I saw VAS and was guessing... I didn't have the time to sift through years of old threads to find what it meant, but it made sense to me.
