[PC] Rise of the Tomb Raider HDR seems to be working now

With the latest Nvidia drivers 385.41 my LG OLED tv HDR auto confirmation kicked in when I loaded the game for the first time yesterday So I think that Microsoft must have updated to correct the issues with HDR in general.

Anybody else seeing improvement in this game as there is no in game option for HDR as a confirmation?

When did they add support? Is this a beta?

So how did you get the alpha build? I checked steam and no “beta” build to register for ??

What makes you think it's not working?

I also have the 20th anniversary version and when I activate HDR in Windows my Samsung KS8000 also switches to HDR when in ROTTR.

It does not switch if HDR in Windows is off or if I start the Game in DirectX 11.

However SLI support seems to be broken somehow in HDR. I get a lower framerate when in HDR with an uneven load on the graphic cards.

Do you also have performance differences?

Is that windows store version of ROTTR that works with HDR, as steam version of ROTTR, 100% does not even support HDR.

Can anyone confirm that HDR is working on this title? Some people are saying it's working on the 20 Year Celebration version, which is only on Steam, while others are saying it only works on the Windows Store version. There are also sources like the PC Gaming Wiki that say the game does not support HDR at all. I don't want to buy on Steam if HDR does not work on that platform.

I'm back with some good news, yes it's finally working after following this YouTuber's suggestion and flicking back and forth, Using the Windows keyboard Key, existing out of fullscreen exclusive mode, and stereoscopic 3-D as you can see below show success! No doubt Windows 10 implementation of HDR desktop drivers obviously helped in the meantime since this original thread was started.
I'm off to continue the campaign which to be fair only had 2% complete anyway.

First of all, that are great news. I'm eagerly waiting for a way to enable HDR on PC for this game. I tried the way you described and i'm not sure if this is real HDR. Yes, there is a difference when switching away from exclusive fullscreen and it looks more like HDR. But in direct comparison it looks not as good as on the XBox One X. Furthermore i'm a little confused because i thought you have to go to exclusive fullscreen mode to get HDR working in games. And here it's the other way around?

Ok, i did some more tests and comparisons this evening and i can confirm that it's true HDR available in the PC-version. The difference to the OneX-version i mentioned in the above post has to do with the hdr-luminance which is customisable in the onex-version. I'm really happy to finally see this game in HDR on PC.

Actually HDR is now working for me but I tried differents settings and my conclusions :

First you MUST enable HDR in Windows 10 v1803 settings, AND in the game launcher be in 1920x1080x60

- In the game launcher : Fullscreen ON, Exclusive Fullscreen ON and DX12 ON :
Ingame menus HDR is on , but as soon as gameplay starts HDR is disabled (just pause during gameplay and you will see HDR enabled again, return to gameplay HDR is disabled, you can see the difference the colors will change)

- Fullscreen ON, Exclusive FS ON and DX12 OFF :
Exactly same things

- Fullscreen ON, Exclusive FS OFF and DX12 ON :

No HDR at all
Switching to Exclusive FS ON in game menu makes HDR work but I have to reapeat 1 or 2 times to have it in proper full screen

- Fullscreen ON, Exclusive FS OFF and DX12 OFF :
Ingame menus HDR is on AND when gameplay starts HDR stay on

So the simpliest way to have HDR is :

HDR must be ON in Windows 10 v1803 settings and in the game launcher resolution MUST be 1920x1080 and

Fullscreen ON, Exclusive Fullscreen OFF and DX12 OFF

Now my LG 2017 TV shows the HDR logo all the time in menus AND in gameplay, colors are more naturals, less redish.

I have a Nvidia GTX 1080 with latest drivers 398.82 and Windows v1803 up to date.

Hope it will help

Thanks to this post !

To show how hit & miss this thing is with further testing yesterday I was also able to get it working with the full screen exclusive mode on as well!

I think you're right about the comparison to other titles like Mass effect Andromeda's implementation of HDR, it's not quite on their level which makes me feel as though that's why it's not advertised as being available or may be it's the Microsoft desktop HDR even allowing us to access this feature?

I know this article "Implementing HDR in ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’", discussed the company (Nixxes) responsible from porting this and future Sony tomb Raider like Shadow Of the Tomb Raider, from the PlayStation " with the help of Nvidia but I don't think this ever came to fruition as it would have been a HDR selection on the option screen like it is on the Xbox and PlayStation I believe.

Roll back update!

Seems after I updated my graphics card to the latest version, HDR only worked when enabled in games or when you enabled borderless fullscreen. I rolled back to an old nvidia driver update 388.13 and was able to use the windows HDR in most games accept last gen games, even in all movies and tv shows that don't even support HDR!
