Debuting at the Hong Kong High End Audio Visual Show 2018, HiFiMan HE1000se ($3499) are a new planar-magnetic headphone model that provides a sizeable boost in sensitivity over the HE1000 V2 ($2799 on Amazon) that it updates. According to the company, this new model is so easy to drive it will even work with tablets and smartphones.
$3500 is a serious chunk of cash, but HiFiMan says you wont get better sound for the price with the HE1000se.
The HE1000se sports neodymium magnets that get credit for increasing efficiency as well as lowering distortion versus the ferrite magnets used in its predecessor. A one nanometer thin diaphragm delivers the fast transient response that is the calling card of planar-magnetic headphones. Sensitivity of the HE1000se is 96 dB, versus 91 dB for the HE1000 V2, which explains how it’s possible to drive them with a portable device.
“The HE1000 is by far one of our most popular high-performance luxury headphones to date, and with good reason,” said Dr. Fang Bian, Founder and CEO, HIFIMAN. “No other headphone in its price range comes close to offering the same level of engagement when listening to high fidelity audio. The HE1000se makes it easy to exceed the legendary HE1000 V2 performance without an expensive amplifier. I couldn’t be more proud of this headphone.”
This new model receives an aesthetic tweak that incorporates a new matte finish and ebony wood trim. The press release also advertises that the specially designed headband features a “steady arch structure” that is durable. HiFiMan claims the fit of these headphones will remain the same for years. The HE1000se weighs 15.2 ounces (440 grams) and offers a frequency response of 8 Hz to 65 kHz with 35-ohm impedance.
